Title
“June” Woodcut-engraving from 1823 Forget Me Not
Subject
Literary Annual Defined
Description
For this first volume, Ackermann used only one engraver, John Samuel Agar, to create both the steel plate frontispiece engraving and the monthly wood-cut engravings of Twelve Months that are the focus of this first volume. Though Rudolph Ackermann's Forget Me Not was the most successful title, popular 1823-1847 with each yearly publication, the process for contents of each annual evolved according to public tastes. At first, woodcut engravings dominated the pages of the early literary annuals, Forget Me Not, The Graces, and Friendship's Offering. But, these simplified images were soon abandoned for the more robust intaglio process of steel plate engravings that allowed for much more artistry and detail.
