Title

Paradise Lost: a Poem in XII Books

Description

The Doves Bible shows a shift away from the ornate designs of the Kelmscott Press towards a simpler aesthetic in which composition and the elegance of the printing are brought to the fore. The Bible is printed in black with red and blue used sparingly and is unillustrated. At first glance it appears a stark departure from the Kelmscott model, but it displays an attention to choice of typeface, page design, materials, and process which have become the hallmarks of the fine press tradition.

300 copies were printed on paper; 25 copies printed on vellum.

"Printed by T.J. Cobden-Sanderson & Emery Walker at The Doves Press and finished 3 June 1902. Compositor: J.H. Mason. Pressmen: H. Gage-Cole, J. Ryan, T. Waller, A. Beaumont. Penmen: Edward Johnston, Grayley [i.e. Graily] Hewitt. Sold at The Doves Press."--Colophon.
