Michael McClure was among the poets most closely associated with Lawrence Ferlinghetti and City Lights. In his introduction to the poem, he states that it "was done in a period of ten days... it is criticizable in the same way as hair or toes." Jack Kerouac called Dark Brown "The most fantastic poem in America."
