It had been Morris's hope that the Kelmscott Press would continue after his death, but his executor, Sydney Cockerell, decided it should be closed to keep all Morris's publications as a cohesive body. This trial page is one of the last things printed before its official closure.
The colophon states that "[t]hese two trial pages of the projected edition of Lord Berners' translation of Froissart were printed at the Kelmscott Press in September, 1897, to preserve the designs made by William Morris. In the border are the arms of France, the Empire, and England; on the second page are those of Reginald Lord Cobham, Sir Walter Manny, and Sir John Chandos."
160 copies were printed. The unfolded vellum sheet measures 48x64 centimeters / 19x25 inches.
