Description
Before The Bengal Annual and The Oriental Annual became popular, Rudolph Ackermann was already engaging in a colonial voyerism through both the engravings and literature offered in this originating literary annual title. This engraving accompanies a poem about an empress who dies of a broken heart. The first 20 lines are dedicated to her beauty. But, the editor, Frederic Shoberl, includes a note that this particular version of the Sacontala mythological tale is translated from the German with Sacontala as a representation of the Queen of Prussia.
