"The Arabian Steed" frontispiece engraving, Musical Bijou 1830
Subject
India
Description
Printed on India paper and tipped (glued) onto the opening page, this frontispiece engraving (drawn on stone and printed using lithography instead of steel plate engraving methods) opens the poetry, prose, and sheet music included in this luxuriously large literary annual with gild edges and paper boards bound with stamped leather on the binding only. Though the rest of this volume deals with other fantastical tales, bucolic poetry scenes, and poems set to music, this opening frontispiece is without an accompanying literary rendering and exists as a representation of "Orientalism" that so fascinated the British at home. The editor offers that this volume of The Musical Bijou has increased the amount of literary offerings by using a smaller type along with increasing the number of illustrations in a larger format.
