DIGITAL EXHIBITION: Visual Poetry

Dublin Core

Title

DIGITAL EXHIBITION: Visual Poetry

Description

Poets, scribes, and printers throughout history have taken advantage of the fact that poetry is both a visual and a verbal art. Defining visual poetry is a recursive act: visual poetry is poetry that is visual. Its appearance may play a role in the reader’s understanding of the text, it may comment upon the text or invite the reader to ponder the relationship between text and appearance. It may lose meaning in the spoken word (even as other meanings might be found in recitation) or it may be impossible to recite. This exhibition spans the breadth of Western visual poetry from the earliest-known example up to present-day experiments in print and design.
